Hong Kong Libraries Connect is very excited to be hosting an Art+Feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon as a core event in our Mentoring Program

Why are we doing this? Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.

As a community of practice of library staff and students, we think this intersection of social and information practice is a space we want to be in, to both learn from the community, demonstrate our information literacy skills and engage with critical librarianship.

The event will not be open to the general public, but if you are interested to attend, please let us know! We will be posting updates to the blog after the event, so check back to see our progress!

If you are attending, here are some things we suggest you do beforehand to make the most of the event:

  1. Create a wikipedia account.

  2. Join the HKLC Art+Feminism Program on Wikipedia: joining the program lets us see how many edits we have made as a group!

  3. Watch an introductory video.

  4. View our list of suggested pages to edit or create (we will be adding to this in the lead up to the event).

We are very much looking forward to this special event! Thanks to everyone for your interest!
